Ephesians is Paul’s exuberant doxology to God for His great love and plan for us revealed in Christ. His joy is felt most intensely in the beginning of the letter. Much is exclaimed in this overflowing praise. The central truth in the praise which grounds everything he says in the letter is the sentence. “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.”
Firstly, God’s love is unconditional. We are not the accidents of combusting matter. God created us out of love and redeems us out of love. We are not an afterthought. We have always been in the heart of God. Our search for love finds its rest in this truth.
Secondly, God chose us in Christ. God’s love for us is not a generic love of all humanity. God’s love is concrete. God’s had a unique call and love for Jesus. In the same way, each of us are unique and uniquely loved. God’s sacrifice of the Jesus whom he loved greatly displays the greatness of God’s love for us.
Thirdly, God chose us to be holy. Holiness is separation from sin because it is a commitment to God. Much as a marriage is a call to an intimate and exclusive relationship, so the call to God is an exclusive relationship. Our purity is in putting God first. That commitment enriches our experience of God’s love.
